A Rainy Day in Autumn

For all the words I’ve learned in this life, so few can accurately describe the ways in which I love the rain. The hues of the leaves falling from trees, gold and lilac flowers in the garden- the colors pop and burst when the sky is cast in grey. The patter at my window sounds just like the tempo of falling in love, and in an instant my heart is primed to do just that. I fall in love with books and music, with the mossy smell of the damp earth. I love a stranger at the coffee shop, my coziest sweater. I fall in love with the fact that my heart is not yet so healed over with scars that there’s no room for wonder to slip through the cracks. And then there’s the moment after the rain; the world glows softly and it’s so quiet, so still. I’m reminded of the fact that there’s some beauty in this world that’s only meant to be discovered in the gloom.
